Day 4 (May 20, 2024): The Trip Home

Image
Happy Victoria day! How nice of Queen Victoria to have been born, and to have had a birthday, all so that we could have the day off.  After a bit of a sleep in, we hit the Algonquin breakfast buffet around 9:15 AM. An hour later, we pulled out of the Resort parking lot and headed home. On the way, we made two stops: New River Beach Provincial Park and Lepreau Falls Provincial Park. It was a beautiful day in New Brunswick, with some sun peeking through the clouds, and a temperature in the mid teens. We did a walk on the beach and were quite impressed at New River Beach, which we had never heard of, and then we carried on to the Falls. We had last visited these falls in August 2021, at which time things were quite dry, and the fall was a trickle. Was much more impressive.  Between Saint John and Moncton, traffic really started to pick up, and then throughout Nova Scotia, especially heading south of Truro towards Halifax, traffic was quite heavy, as many people returned to the ci...

Day 3 (May 19, 2024): More St. Andrews, as well as St. Stephen

We awoke to a rainy Sunday morning, with chilly temperatures.  We took it easy, enjoying the Algonquin's breakfast buffet, including a wonderful omelet station.   The day involved seeing some sights in St. Andrew's, then heading to the Canada-USA border town of St. Stephen, then heading back for a walk in St. Andrew's.  We tried to build up our appetite for a five-star dinner at an inn just outside St. Andrew's. Details are shown via the pictures below.  But all in all, it was a wonderful day! The Algonquin has two firepits outside, which are popular spots for folks to gather. New Brunswick is known for a spring delicacy called fiddle-heads - that is, ferns before they unfurl in the spring.  Cooked with butter and lemon juice, they are a very popular dish.  These ferns are just past the fiddle-head phase. This is the pier in St. Andrews' harbour at maximum low-tide yesterday, and taken from the same spot today at maximum high tide.   This is ...

Days 1-2 (May 17-18, 2024): Pam’s Arrival in Moncton and First Day in St. Andrew’s

It has been a rough spring for us.  I've been training for the Parole Board since April 2nd and, with the exception of one week off, have been away for six weeks in Ottawa and Moncton.  So we decided to do a little getaway together to St. Andrew's, New Brunswick for the Victoria Day long weekend. Pam finished school at 11:30AM, drive home, jumped in an Uber, and left the Halifax Via Rail station at exactly 1PM.  The train rolled into the Moncton Via Rail station right on time at 5:15PM.  We did a walk along the Petitcodiac River, while we waited for the famous tidal bore to arrive.  It was scheduled for 6:40PM, but it actually showed up 20 minutes early!  Early arrivals probably explain why, after trying to see the tidal bore over the course of three decades of business travel to Moncton, I had never succeeded until today! No visit to Moncton is complete without... St. Hubert, a treat we cannot buy in Nova Scotia.  We picked up our chicken and he...
